Problem

Multiple failed attempts to achieve venous access are costly and associated with an increased risk of complications compromising patient safety and care.

Solution

The A-Lite vein locator provides easy access to patients’ veins at 10 times less than the price of existing vein detection products on the market.

Results

Patients randomized to the A-Lite vein locator group required significantly less time to access a vein as compared with the standard method group.

Clinical Trials

Pre-clinical Trial

The laboratory-based clinical trial was accomplished at Gearbox in Nairobi, Kenya where the device was exposed to conditions similar to those in the intended clinical environment.

Interventional Clinical Trial

First in human single-arm study conducted to assess the safety and efficacy of the A-Lite vein locator device. No adverse events related to the use of the A-Lite vein locator device were reported.

Comparative Clinical Trial

The median time for successful IV cannulation in the intervention group was 89 seconds as compared to 149 seconds in the control group.

A-Lite Vein Locator Clinical Effectiveness

This pilot study provided evidence that the use of the A-Lite vein locator is safe and effective in improving vein visibility among children undergoing IV cannulation.

About 20% of patients experience mild to an intense fear of needles which stimulates the sympathetic nervous system and triggers vasoconstriction and vasovagal reactions, making an I.V. start more difficult in these patients.
